WSJ: Government Must Boost Pay, Change Culture to Hire Top Tech Talent
"Government agencies typically pay less than private sector companies, said John Challenger, CEO of professional staffing firm Challenger Gray & Christmas Inc.
"But even if the government boosts pay and streamlines its hiring processes, its culture may still prove too bureaucratic and process-centric for top talent. Mr. Challenger said the government bureaucracy doesn’t allow for the business agility – the potential to get jobs done skillfully and quickly — that lures talent to the private sector. Barring major cultural changes within the government, he is skeptical that the administration’s efforts will improve its hiring pool. 'These are oil and water cultures,' said Mr. Challenger. 'We need much better tech workers in government but I just don’t think you can get there from here.'"
